FAQs
Can I be hypnotised?
Most likely, yes. There are a variety of hypnotherapy techniques, and it can be as simple as using your imagination. If you can daydream, if you enjoy a good story, if you can sometimes think about one thing while doing another, if you can think a thought and feel an emotion, you’re pretty much good to go. We will work together to find the best approach for you.
Will you make me quack like a duck?
No! You’re probably thinking of stage hypnosis, which is for entertainment purposes only; it’s not therapy. Although therapeutic hypnosis works in a similar way (for example: using specific language patterns), the goal is for you to make the changes you want to make, not to entertain others.
How many sessions will it take?
This is a difficult question to answer as there are no hard and fast rules for any particular issue. Sometimes people experience change very quickly, even after the first session. And for others, it can take a few months or more. Each session is tailored to your individual needs because not everyone who has a particular issue experiences it the exact same way. Some people will have a lot to work through and others will have much less. Notice how many possible thoughts, feelings and experiences I listed on the Trichotillomania page for example. Most people who experience this issue probably won’t tick them all off, but they mostly likely have a few. Our individual experiences vary and therapy can as well.
Do you work with children and teens?
In general, yes, I have worked with children as young as 4 years old. However, for some issues, I might recommend a minimum age. This is simply because for some things, the child needs to choose to want to change (not just because a parent or carer wants them to) and be motivated enough, and able, to practice and incorporate the strategies recommended independently.
For young children (and some older children and teens) I will expect you, as their parent or carer, to agree to participate in therapy sessions to address and work on your responses to your child’s particular issue. I will also expect that you will work with your child outside of sessions to support them to practice the strategies devised in sessions in a gentle and empowering manner.
Please note: I do not work online with children under the age of 6 years. For children aged 6-11, I will require you be present for the online session or close by. For children and teens aged 12 years and over, this will be assessed on an individual basis, though you will still be expected to be available if required.
Will it work for me?
Yes, it can work for you. Having said that, please be aware that I’m not able to make any guarantees. Hypnotherapy is not magic, it’s like any other therapeutic technique and takes some work on your part (as well as mine). In my experience in general, those who achieve the most success are those who practice and implement what they’ve learnt in session into their everyday lives.
